without entrusting it to others. In short, it has been several days since the party of news-bringers conveyed the manner of the prince's
arrival to the auspicious royal hearing, and reported the glory of your noble descent, the honor of your high lineage,
and your adornment with all varieties of essential virtues and all classes of excellent traits. The king's
longing to meet your auspicious person and associate with your blessed essence has exceeded all bounds and descriptions,
and he desires to attain this purpose swiftly, and to derive the most abundant share from this good fortune." When the prince meets the courtier with assent
and presents himself at the king's gathering of intimacy,
the king should go to a certain garden situated on the waterside, prepare all manner of banquet furnishings for him,
and engage with him in one of the games, the rule being that whoever loses must dive into the water and
bring out a fish from the depths of the water. Beneath that garden is a whirlpool where crocodiles and man-eating fishes
congregate, and because the reach of fishermen does not touch them, they linger constantly right there. Since the prince is unaware of this circumstance,
whether out of heedlessness or out of bashful modesty,
he will cast himself into the water and in truth become food for crocodiles and a morsel for fishes. For my part,
this stratagem appears close to achieving the task, and farthest from Samanbar discovering its depth; let it be seen what the world-conquering judgment
decrees.' The king said: 'The signs of your consummate intellect, utmost piety, sound judgment, and auspicious
forehead have been continually observed and witnessed in the good order of the realm. Today it has been demonstrated anew,
and we have added it to your previous pleasing services. Now I entrust the courtier to you; instruct him in the manner of inviting the prince,
just as you set forth in our presence, and prepare the banquet requisites in that very garden
so that we may hold an assembly there and set our mind at rest by removing the prince.' The vizier likewise
deemed it necessary to arrange the banquet rites in that manner, and dispatched the courtier to the prince. The prince received the import of the command with acceptance,
regarded attendance at the banquet gathering as an absolute duty, mounted a wind-swift steed
which had been brought to him from the royal stables as a lead-horse, and presented himself at the king's palace.
The king bestowed abundant honor and respect upon him, went to that garden in the prince's company,
bestowed the most complete arrangement and ornamentation upon the banquet hall, and signaled for the serving of foods and
drinks reminiscent of the tables of highest Paradise. After enjoyment and savoring of the feast's delights,
the king turned to the prince and said: 'Through the blessing of your companionship and communion, we have gained an ample portion and a soul-enriching
