If it is said that cognition is produced [by visible matter] acting as an efficient cause, and visible matter [is produced by it] acting as a material cause, then how is it possible for one [thing] to possess multiple forms? And a difference of objects and the like cannot be established by a mere difference of terms. Just like visible matter, cognition too would result in having the nature of visible matter. And if that entails, there is no self belonging to the other world; because of its non-existence, there is no other world. Planting this very point in mind, the revered Bṛhaspati said: 'Because of the non-existence of one who goes to the other world, there is no other world.'
