What is here called 'instrument' should be understood to be thirteenfold: the five action faculties, the five sensory faculties, the intellect, egoity, and the mind—this is the thirteenfold instrument. Here he says: It is grasping, retaining, and illuminating. Among these, grasping is the characteristic of the [action] faculties; retaining is the characteristic of self-assertion; illuminating is the characteristic of the intellect. Here he asks: What is that which is grasped, retained, and illuminated? To this it is said: 'And its effect is tenfold: to be grasped, to be retained, and to be illuminated.' 'Effect' means the five: sound, touch, taste, form, and smell; and the five: speech, grasping, movement, excretion, and sexual pleasure. These ten objects are called the 'effect.' That tenfold object—the matter illuminated by the sensory faculties—the action faculties grasp and retain. Just as a pot situated in darkness and illuminated by a lamp is taken up and held by the hand. Thus, just as with a pot, so it is with the rest as well.
