taṃ pabhū ṇaṃ bhaṃte! gosāle maṃkhaliputte taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae? visae ṇaṃ bhaṃte! gosā-lassa maṃkhaliputtassa taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae? samatthe ṇaṃ bhaṃte! gosāle maṃkhaliputte taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egā-haccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae?
pabhū ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! gosāle maṃkhaliputte taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae| visae ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! gosālassa maṃkhaliputtassa taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae| samatthe ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! gosāle maṃkhaliputte taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae, no ceva ṇaṃ arahaṃte bhagavaṃte, pāriyāvaṇiyaṃ puṇa karejjā| jāvatie ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! gosālassa maṃkhaliputtassa tave tee, etto anaṃtaguṇavisiṭṭhatarāe ceva tave tee aṇagārāṇaṃ bhagavaṃtāṇaṃ, khaṃtikhamā puṇa anagārā bhagavaṃto| jāvaie ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! anagārāṇaṃ bhagavaṃtāṇaṃ tave tee etto anaṃtaguṇavisiṭṭhatarāe ceva tave tee therāṇaṃ bhagavaṃtāṇaṃ, khaṃtikhamā puṇa therā bhagavaṃto| jāvatie ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! therāṇaṃ bhagavaṃtāṇaṃ tave tee etto anaṃtaguṇavisiṭṭhatarāe ceva tave tee arahaṃtāṇaṃ bhagavaṃtāṇaṃ, khaṃtikhamā puṇa arahaṃtā bhagavaṃto|
taṃ pabhū ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! gosāle maṃkhaliputte taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae, visae ṇaṃ ānaṃdā gosālassa maṃkhaliputtassa taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae, samatthe ṇaṃ ānaṃdā! gosāle maṃkhaliputte taveṇaṃ teeṇaṃ egāhaccaṃ kūḍāhaccaṃ bhāsarāsiṃ karettae, no ceva ṇaṃ arahaṃte bhagavaṃte, pāriyāvaṇiyaṃ puṇa karejjā|

“Then, Venerable Sir, is Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra able to reduce [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat? Venerable Sir, is it within the scope of Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra to reduce [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat? Venerable Sir, is Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra capable of reducing [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat?”
“Indeed, Ānanda, Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra is able to reduce [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat. Indeed, Ānanda, it is within the scope of Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra to reduce [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat. Indeed, Ānanda, Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra is capable of reducing [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat—yet never an arhat Lord, though he might cause him distress. Ānanda, whatever austerity and heat Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra has, infinitely superior to that is the austerity and heat of the venerable homeless ascetics; but the venerable homeless ascetics are endowed with forgiveness and forbearance. Ānanda, whatever austerity and heat the venerable homeless ascetics have, infinitely superior to that is the austerity and heat of the venerable elders; but the venerable elders are endowed with forgiveness and forbearance. Ānanda, whatever austerity and heat the venerable elders have, infinitely superior to that is the austerity and heat of the arhat Lords; but the arhat Lords are endowed with forgiveness and forbearance.
Therefore, Ānanda, Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra is able to reduce [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat; indeed, Ānanda, it is within the scope of Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra to reduce [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat; indeed, Ānanda, Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra is capable of reducing [someone] to a heap of ashes at a single stroke, like a blow with a mallet, through his austerity and heat—yet never an arhat Lord, though he might cause him distress.”
