Then the elder Ānanda, being addressed thus by the Śramaṇa Lord Mahāvīra, paid homage and obeisance to the Śramaṇa Lord Mahāvīra. Having paid homage and obeisance, he approached the śramaṇa Nirgranthas headed by Gautama. Having approached, he addressed the śramaṇa Nirgranthas headed by Gautama, saying thus: ‘Indeed, noble ones, on the day of breaking my fast of the sixth [meal], having received permission from the Śramaṇa Lord Mahāvīra, [I was wandering among] high, low, and middle families in the city of Śrāvastī…’—all of that up to—‘inform the śramaṇa Nirgranthas headed by Gautama of this matter: “Therefore, noble ones, let none among you challenge Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra with righteous urging, nor correct him with righteous admonition, nor engage him with righteous communication; for Gośāla Maṅkhaliputra has adopted false views toward the śramaṇa Nirgranthas.”’”
