"Venerable Sir, to a single jīva in a single assumption of existence, how many jīvas come to be sons?"
"Gautama, at the minimum one, or two, or three; at the maximum, several hundred thousand jīvas come to be sons."
"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: 'At the minimum one, or two, or three; at the maximum, several hundred thousand jīvas come to be sons'?"
"Gautama, in the karma-produced womb of a woman and a man, the union called copulatory activity arises. They both accumulate fluids; having accumulated [them], there at the minimum one, or two, or three, [and] at the maximum several hundred thousand jīvas come to be sons. For that reason, Gautama, it is said: 'At the minimum one, or two, or three; at the maximum, several hundred thousand jīvas come to be sons.'"
