“Venerable Sir! How many pulākas might there be at one time?”
“Gautama! With reference to one who is attaining [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not. If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum a plurality of hundreds.
With reference to one who has previously attained [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not. If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum a plurality of thousands.
“Venerable Sir! The bakuśas at one time—” [the question].
“Gautama! With reference to one who is attaining [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not. If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum a plurality of hundreds. With reference to one who has previously attained [it], at minimum a plurality of hundreds of koṭis, at maximum also a plurality of hundreds of koṭis. Likewise also the paḍisevaṇā-kusīla.
Regarding the kasāya-kusīlas—” [the question].
“Gautama! With reference to one who is attaining [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not. If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum a plurality of thousands. With reference to one who has previously attained [it], at minimum a plurality of thousands of koṭis, at maximum also a plurality of thousands of koṭis.
Regarding the nirgranthas—” [the question].
“Gautama! With reference to one who is attaining [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not.
If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum one hundred and sixty-two—one hundred and eight for those on the ladder of destruction, fifty-four for those on the ladder of appeasement.
With reference to one who has previously attained [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not. If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum a plurality of hundreds.
Regarding the snātakas—” [the question].
“Gautama! With reference to one who is attaining [it], sometimes there are, sometimes there are not. If there are, at minimum one, or two, or three; at maximum one hundred and eight. With reference to one who has previously attained [it], at minimum a plurality of koṭis, at maximum also a plurality of koṭis.
“Venerable Sir! Among these pulākas, bakuśas, paḍisevaṇā-kusīlas, kasāya-kusīlas, nirgranthas, and snātakas, which are fewer, or more, or equal, or especially greater than which?”
“Gautama! The nirgranthas are the fewest of all; the pulākas are countably times more; the snātakas are countably times more; the bakuśas are countably times more; the paḍisevaṇā-kusīlas are countably times more; the kasāya-kusīlas are countably times more.”
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”—and so on, until he continues [his practice].
