“Venerable Sir! Would one restrained with sāmāyika have an increasing transformation, a decreasing transformation, [or] a stable transformation?”
“Gautama! An increasing transformation [is to be understood] as for a pulāka. In this way up to [one restrained with] parihāraviśuddhi.
[As for] one [restrained with] sūkṣmasamparāya—the question [is the same].
Gautama! He may have an increasing transformation, or he may have a decreasing transformation, but he does not have a stable transformation. [One restrained with] yathākhyāta [is to be understood] as for a nirgrantha.
“Venerable Sir! For how long a time may one restrained with sāmāyika have an increasing transformation?”
“Gautama! At a minimum, for one samaya, as for a pulāka. In this way up to [one restrained with] parihāraviśuddhi.
“Venerable Sir! For how long a time may one restrained with sūkṣmasamparāya have an increasing transformation?”
“Gautama! At a minimum, for one samaya; at a maximum, for an antarmuhūrta.”
“For how long a time may he have a decreasing transformation?” “Just the same.”
“Venerable Sir! For how long a time may one restrained with yathākhyāta have an increasing transformation?”
“Gautama! At a minimum, for an antarmuhūrta; at a maximum too, for an antarmuhūrta.”
“For how long a time may he have a stable transformation?”
“Gautama! At a minimum, for one samaya; at a maximum, for a pūrvakoṭi less a fraction.”
