Then that Camara, Indra of the Asuras, king of the Asuras, having been freed from the fear of the thunderbolt, having been humiliated with great humiliation by Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, sat down on the Camara throne in the Sudharmā assembly hall in the royal capital Camaracañcā, with his mind and intentions despondent, plunged into an ocean of anxiety and grief, his face resting on the palm of his hand, fallen into mournful contemplation, with his gaze directed at the ground, brooding.
Then the gods born in the assembly of peers saw Camara, Indra of the Asuras, king of the Asuras, with his mind and intentions despondent, up to brooding. Having seen him, folding their hands with palms joined, ten fingernails placed to the head, making an añjali upon their heads, they greeted him with cries of victory and triumph. Having greeted him, they spoke thus: “Why, O beloved of the gods, with your mind and intentions despondent, plunged into an ocean of anxiety and grief, face resting on the palm of your hand, fallen into mournful contemplation, your gaze directed at the ground, are you brooding?”
Then Camara, Indra of the Asuras, king of the Asuras, spoke thus to those gods born in the assembly of peers: “Truly, O beloved of the gods, having taken refuge in the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra, I myself provoked Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods.
Then, having become enraged, he hurled his thunderbolt to slay me. May well-being befall the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra, O beloved of the gods, by whose power I have come here unhurt, unpained, unafflicted, arrived here, reached here, and abide here today having taken refuge!
Therefore, let us go, O beloved of the gods, to the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra; let us venerate, pay homage, up to attend upon him.” Having said so, together with sixty-four thousand peer-gods, up to with all his divine splendour, up to where the excellent Aśoka tree was, where my presence was, he approached. Having approached, having circumambulated me three times from left to right, having venerated and paid homage, he spoke thus: “Truly, Venerable Sir, taking refuge in you, I myself provoked Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods.
Then, having become enraged, he hurled his thunderbolt to slay me. May well-being befall the beloved of the gods, by whose power I have come here unhurt, unpained, unafflicted, arrived here, reached here, and abide today having taken refuge! So I beg forgiveness, O beloved of the gods! May the beloved of the gods forgive me! The beloved of the gods ought to forgive me! I will not act thus again.” Having said so, he venerated me, paid homage, and having venerated and paid homage, he withdrew toward the north-eastern quarter. Having withdrawn, up to he displayed a theatrical performance consisting of thirty-two variations. Having displayed it, he departed in the very direction from which he had appeared.
Thus, indeed, O Gautama, by Camara, Indra of the Asuras, king of the Asuras, was that celestial divine power, celestial divine splendour, celestial divine grandeur obtained, reached, and acquired. His lifespan duration is one sāgaropama; he will attain liberation in the region of Mahāvideha, up to make an end [of all suffering].
