"Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the space outside the central channel of the lower world, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul in the space outside the central channel of the upper world, with an intervening motion (vigraha) of how many instants (samayas) would it be reborn?"
"Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of three instants or four instants."
"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: 'with an intervening motion of three instants or four instants'?"
"Gautama! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the space outside the central channel of the lower world, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul in the space outside the central channel of the upper world along a straight line in the same horizontal plane (eka-pratara anuśreṇi), it would be reborn with an intervening motion of three instants; if it is destined to be reborn along a diagonal/bent line (viśreṇi), it would be reborn with an intervening motion of four instants. For that reason, [Gautama! it is said] up to: 'it would be reborn.' In this manner also regarding rebirth as a developed subtle earth-bodied soul, and so forth up to a developed subtle fire-bodied soul.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the space outside the central channel of the lower world, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped gross fire-bodied soul in the time-region (samayakṣetra), with an intervening motion of how many instants would it be reborn?'
'Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of two instants or three instants.'
'For what reason?'
'Truly thus, Gautama, seven series (śreṇis) have been declared by me, namely: straight-extended up to half-circular. Being reborn along a series with one bend, it would be reborn with an intervening motion of two instants; being reborn along a series with two bends, it would be reborn with an intervening motion of three instants. For that reason.'
In this manner rebirth into developed gross fire-bodied souls should also be expounded. Rebirth into wind-bodied and plant-bodied souls across the fourfold division should be expounded just as for water-bodied souls. As the movement pattern of an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul has been stated, so also it should be stated for a developed subtle earth-bodied soul, and in the very same way rebirth should be expounded across the twenty situations.
[Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped gross earth-bodied soul] has undergone transmigration in the space outside the central channel of the lower world? In this manner it should be stated both for the undeveloped and developed gross earth-bodied soul. So also it should be stated for the four varieties of water-bodied souls. And just so for both varieties of subtle fire-bodied souls.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped gross fire-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the time-region, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul in the space outside the central channel of the upper world, with an intervening motion of how many instants would it be reborn?'
'Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of two instants, three instants, or four instants.'
'For what reason?' The explanation is just as in Ratnaprabhā, likewise with the seven series. And so on, up to:
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped gross fire-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the time-region, is destined to be reborn as a developed subtle fire-bodied soul in the space outside the central channel of the upper world, Venerable Sir?' The rest is the same.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped gross fire-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the time-region, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped gross fire-bodied soul in the time-region, with an intervening motion of how many instants would it be reborn?'
'Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of one instant, two instants, or three instants.'
'For what reason?'
The explanation is just as in Ratnaprabhā, likewise with the seven series. In this manner also regarding rebirth as a developed gross fire-bodied soul. In wind-bodied souls and plant-bodied souls, rebirth should be expounded across the fourfold division just as it was expounded for earth-bodied souls. In this manner a developed gross fire-bodied soul should also be expounded as taking birth in these very situations. For wind-bodied and plant-bodied souls, rebirth should be stated just as for rebirth as an earth-bodied soul.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration in the space outside the central channel of the upper world, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul in the space outside the central channel of the lower world, Venerable Sir, with [an intervening motion of] how many instants?' In this manner, for those undergoing transmigration in the space outside the central channel of the upper world and being reborn in the space outside the central channel of the lower world, that very same pattern should be stated without exception up to the rebirth of a developed gross plant-bodied soul into developed gross plant-bodied souls.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration at the eastern end of the universe, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul at that very eastern end of the universe, with an intervening motion of how many instants would it be reborn?'
'Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of one instant, two instants, three instants, or four instants.'
'For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: "with an intervening motion of one instant up to [four instants] it would be reborn"?'
'Truly thus, Gautama, seven series have been declared by me, namely: straight-extended up to half-circular. Being reborn along a straight-extended series, it would be reborn with an intervening motion of one instant. Being reborn along a series with one bend, it would be reborn with an intervening motion of two instants. Being reborn along a series with two bends, if it is destined to be reborn along a straight line in the same horizontal plane, it would be reborn with an intervening motion of three instants; if it is destined to be reborn along a diagonal line, it would be reborn with an intervening motion of four instants. For that reason, [it is said] up to: "it would be reborn."
In this manner, an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul having undergone transmigration at the eastern end of the universe, its rebirth at that very eastern end of the universe into undeveloped and developed subtle earth-bodied souls, undeveloped and developed subtle water-bodied souls, undeveloped and developed subtle fire-bodied souls, undeveloped and developed subtle wind-bodied souls, undeveloped and developed gross wind-bodied souls, and undeveloped and developed subtle plant-bodied souls—across all twelve situations should be stated in this very order. A developed subtle earth-bodied soul should similarly be expounded without exception across all twelve situations.
In this manner, following this pattern, it should be stated up to the rebirth of a developed subtle plant-bodied soul into developed subtle plant-bodied souls.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration at the eastern end of the universe, is destined to be reborn among undeveloped subtle earth-bodied souls at the southern end of the universe, with an intervening motion of how many instants would it be reborn?'
'Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of two instants, three instants, or four instants.'
'For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said?'
'Truly thus, Gautama, seven series have been declared by me, namely: straight-extended up to half-circular. For that reason, Gautama! In this manner, according to this pattern, rebirth from transmigration at the eastern end to the southern end should be expounded up to a developed subtle plant-bodied soul into developed subtle plant-bodied souls; for all of them, an intervening motion of two instants, three instants, or four instants should be stated.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration at the eastern end of the universe, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul at the western end of the universe, with an intervening motion of how many instants would it be reborn?'
'Gautama! It may be reborn with an intervening motion of one instant, two instants, three instants, or four instants.'
'For what reason?'
'In this manner, just as for those transmigrating at the eastern end and taking rebirth at the eastern end itself, so all should be expounded for those transmigrating at the eastern end and taking rebirth at the western end.'
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration at the eastern end of the universe, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul at the northern end of the universe, Venerable Sir?' Just as rebirth was expounded from transmigration at the eastern end to the southern end, so should rebirth be expounded from transmigration at the eastern end to the northern end.
'Venerable Sir! If an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul, having undergone transmigration at the southern end of the universe, is destined to be reborn as an undeveloped subtle earth-bodied soul at that very southern end of the universe?' As rebirth was expounded from transmigration at the eastern end to the eastern end itself, so should rebirth be expounded from transmigration at the southern end to the southern end itself; likewise, without exception, up to a developed subtle plant-bodied soul taking rebirth at the southern end among developed subtle plant-bodied souls. In this manner rebirth from transmigration at the southern end to the western end should be expounded, with the exception that the intervening motion is of two instants, three instants, or four instants; the rest is the same.
In this manner rebirth from transmigration at the southern end to the northern end should be expounded just as in its own place (transmigration and rebirth at the same end): an intervening motion of one instant, two instants, three instants, or four instants. At the eastern end, just as at the western end, likewise an intervening motion of two instants, three instants, or four instants. For those transmigrating at the western end and taking rebirth at the western end itself, it is just as in its own place. For those taking rebirth at the northern end, there is no one-instant intervening motion; the rest is the same. At the eastern end, just as in its own place; at the southern end, there is no one-instant intervening motion; the rest is the same. For those transmigrating at the northern end and taking rebirth at the northern end itself, it is just as in its own place. For those transmigrating at the northern end and taking rebirth at the eastern end, it is likewise, with the exception that there is a one-instant intervening motion. For those transmigrating at the northern end and taking rebirth at the southern end, it is just as in its own place. For those transmigrating at the northern end and taking rebirth at the western end, there is no one-instant intervening motion; the rest is the same up to a developed subtle plant-bodied soul taking rebirth among developed subtle plant-bodied souls.
'Where, Venerable Sir, are the abodes of developed gross earth-bodied souls declared to be?'
'Gautama! In their own places across the eight earths, as stated in the Sthānapada, up to subtle plant-bodied souls; those that are developed and those that are undeveloped are all declared to be of one kind, without distinction or difference, coextensive with the entire universe, O long-lived Śramaṇa!'
'Venerable Sir! How many karma types (karmaprakṛtis) are declared for undeveloped subtle earth-bodied souls?'
'Gautama! Eight karma types are declared, namely: knowledge-obscuring up to obstructive. In this manner across the fourfold division, just as in the one-sensed souls' chapters, up to developed gross plant-bodied souls.'
'Venerable Sir! How many karma types do undeveloped subtle earth-bodied souls bind?'
'Gautama! They bind seven varieties or eight varieties, as in the one-sensed souls' chapters, up to developed gross plant-bodied souls.'
'Venerable Sir! How many karma types do undeveloped subtle earth-bodied souls experience?'
'Gautama! They experience fourteen karma types, namely: knowledge-obscuring, as in the one-sensed souls' chapters, up to excluding male gender. In this manner up to developed gross plant-bodied souls.'
'From where, Venerable Sir, do one-sensed souls take rebirth—do they take rebirth from hell-beings?' [The answer is] as given in the section on descent (Vyutkrānti) regarding the rebirth of earth-bodied souls.
'How many soul-expansions (samudghātas) are declared for one-sensed souls, Venerable Sir?'
'Gautama! Four soul-expansions are declared, namely: through sensation-expansion up to transformational expansion.'
'Venerable Sir! Do one-sensed souls of equal lifespan duration produce equally differentiated karma? Do those of equal lifespan duration produce unequally differentiated karma? Do those of unequal lifespan duration produce equally differentiated karma? Do those of unequal lifespan duration produce unequally differentiated karma?'
'Gautama! Some of equal lifespan duration produce equally differentiated karma; some of equal lifespan duration produce unequally differentiated karma; some of unequal lifespan duration produce equally differentiated karma; some of unequal lifespan duration produce unequally differentiated karma.'
'For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: "Some of equal lifespan duration [produce equally differentiated karma] up to unequally differentiated karma"?'
'Gautama! One-sensed souls are declared to be of four kinds, namely: some have equal lifespans and were reborn simultaneously; some have equal lifespans and were reborn non-simultaneously; some have unequal lifespans and were reborn simultaneously; some have unequal lifespans and were reborn non-simultaneously.
Therein, those who have equal lifespans and were reborn simultaneously, being of equal lifespan duration, produce equally differentiated karma. Therein, those who have equal lifespans and were reborn non-simultaneously, being of equal lifespan duration, produce unequally differentiated karma.
Therein, those who have unequal lifespans and were reborn simultaneously, being of unequal lifespan duration, produce equally differentiated karma.
Therein, those who have unequal lifespans and were reborn non-simultaneously, being of unequal lifespan duration, produce unequally differentiated karma.
For that reason, Gautama! [it is said] up to: "they produce unequally differentiated karma."
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!" [Having so spoken, Gautama] continues to dwell [in reverence]."
