Usabha the Kosalan arhat had the vajra-ṛṣabha-nārāca adamantine osseous structure, was formed with the symmetrical configuration, and was five hundred dhanuses in height.
Usabha the Kosalan arhat, having resided for two million pūrvas in the state of a prince, having resided for six million three hundred thousand pūrvas in the state of kingship, [and thus] having resided for eight million three hundred thousand pūrvas in the householder state, became shaven-headed and renounced from the household life into the homeless life.
Usabha the Kosalan arhat, having completed one thousand years in the stage of an unperfected ascetic, having completed one hundred thousand pūrvas less one thousand years in the stage of an omniscient kevalin, [and thus] having completed fully one hundred thousand pūrvas in the stage of asceticism, and having safeguarded an entire life of eight million four hundred thousand pūrvas, in the third month of winter, the fifth fortnight, the dark fortnight of Māgha—on the thirteenth day of that dark fortnight of Māgha, surrounded by ten thousand homeless ascetics on the summit of Mount Aṣṭāpada, having fasted with the fourteenth meal without water, seated in the cross-legged posture, during the forenoon, the moon being in conjunction with the constellation Abhijit, with eighty-nine fortnights remaining in the period of suṣama-duḥṣamā, died, passed away, departed, severed the bonds of birth, old age, and death, became perfected, awakened, liberated, brought an end [to rebirth], attained final release, and was freed from all suffering.
And at the very moment when Usabha the Kosalan arhat died, passed away, departed, severed the bonds of birth, old age, and death, became perfected, awakened, liberated, brought an end [to rebirth], attained final release, and was freed from all suffering, at that moment the throne of Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, shook.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, saw his throne shake; having seen it, he employed clairvoyant knowledge; having employed it, he directed his clairvoyant knowledge toward the venerable tīrthaṅkara; having directed it, he said thus: "Usabha the Kosalan arhat in Jambūdvīpa island, in the realm of Bharata, has indeed attained final release! It is the customary practice of past, present, and future Śakras, Indras of the gods, kings of the gods, to perform the final release celebration of the tīrthaṅkaras. Therefore I too will go and perform the final release celebration of the venerable tīrthaṅkara." Having reflected thus, he bowed and paid homage; having bowed and paid homage, surrounded by eighty-four thousand sāmānika gods, thirty-three trāyastriṃśa gods, the four lokapālas, eight chief queens with their retinues, three assemblies, seven armies, seven commanders of armies, four times eighty-four thousand body-guard gods, and by many other Vaimānika gods and goddesses residing in the Saudharma realm, ...
... with that supreme, rapid, swift, vehement, fast, buoyant, triumphant, skillful, celestial godly movement, darting through the very midst of innumerable islands and oceans, he arrived where Mount Aṣṭāpada was, where the body of the venerable tīrthaṅkara was; having arrived, dejected, joyless, his eyes filled with tears, he circumambulated the body of the tīrthaṅkara three times clockwise from right to left; having done so, neither too close nor too far, eager to serve, paying homage, facing him, he attended upon him with folded hands in reverence.
At that time and at that period, Īśāna, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, sovereign of the northern half of the cosmos, master of two million eight hundred thousand celestial mansions, trident-bearer, riding a bull, lord of the gods, wearing garments like the dustless sky, up to: was living enjoying extensive pleasures of senses.
Then the throne of that Īśāna, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, shook.
Then Īśāna, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, saw his throne shake; having seen it, he employed clairvoyant knowledge; having employed it, he directed his clairvoyant knowledge toward the venerable tīrthaṅkara; having directed it, just as Śakra, he is to be brought along with his own retinue, up to: he attends upon him.
In this way all the Indras of the gods up to Acyuta are to be brought along with their respective retinues. In this way, down to the Indras of the Bhavanavāsīs, the sixteen of the Vāṇamantaras, and the two of the Jyotiṣkas are to be understood with their respective retinues.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, said thus to many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Bring fresh, superior gośīrṣa sandalwood logs from the Nandana forest; having brought them, erect three funeral pyres—one for the venerable tīrthaṅkara, one for the gaṇadharas, and one for the remaining homeless ascetics."
Then those Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods brought fresh, superior gośīrṣa sandalwood logs from the Nandana forest; having brought them, they erected three funeral pyres—one for the venerable tīrthaṅkara, one for the gaṇadharas, and one for the remaining homeless ascetics.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, summoned the Ābhiyogika gods; having summoned them, he said thus: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Bring milk-water from the Kṣīroda ocean."
Then those Ābhiyogika gods brought milk-water from the Kṣīroda ocean.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, bathed the body of the tīrthaṅkara with milk-water; having bathed it, he anointed it with fresh, superior gośīrṣa sandalwood; having anointed it, he dressed it in a fine cloth marked with swans; having dressed it, he adorned it with all ornaments.
Then those Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods bathed the bodies of the gaṇadharas and the bodies of the homeless ascetics with milk-water; having bathed them, they anointed them with fresh, superior gośīrṣa sandalwood; having anointed them, they dressed them in pairs of unworn divine garments; having dressed them, they adorned them with all ornaments.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, said thus to those many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Fashion three litters decorated with varied figures of deer, bulls, horses, men, makaras, birds, beasts of prey, kinnaras, ruru deer, sarabhas, yaks, elephants, forest vines, and lotus vines—one for the venerable tīrthaṅkara, one for the gaṇadharas, and one for the remaining homeless ascetics."
Then those many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, and Vaimānika gods fashioned three litters—one for the venerable tīrthaṅkara, one for the gaṇadharas, and one for the remaining homeless ascetics.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, dejected, joyless, his eyes filled with tears, placed upon the litter the body of the venerable tīrthaṅkara, whose birth, old age, and death had been destroyed; having placed it, he set it upon the funeral pyre.
Then the many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods placed upon the litters the bodies of the gaṇadharas and the homeless ascetics, whose birth, old age, and death had been destroyed; having placed them, they set them upon the funeral pyres.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, summoned the Agnikumāra gods; having summoned them, he said thus: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Create the fire-body upon the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics; having created it, report back this order."
Then those Agnikumāra gods, dejected, joyless, their eyes filled with tears, created the fire-body upon the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, summoned the Vāyukumāra gods; having summoned them, he said thus: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Create the wind-body upon the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics; having created it, kindle the fire-body, and burn the body of the tīrthaṅkara, the bodies of the gaṇadharas, and the bodies of the homeless ascetics."
Then those Vāyukumāra gods, dejected, joyless, their eyes filled with tears, created the wind-body upon the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics, kindled the fire-body, and burned the body of the tīrthaṅkara, the bodies of the gaṇadharas, and the bodies of the homeless ascetics.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, said thus to those many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Bring pots upon pots and loads upon loads of agallochum, olibanum, ghee, and honey to the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics."
Then those Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods brought pots upon pots and loads upon loads of agallochum, olibanum, ghee, and honey to the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, summoned the Meghakumāra gods; having summoned them, he said thus: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Extinguish the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics with milk-water."
Then those Meghakumāra gods extinguished the funeral pyre of the tīrthaṅkara, the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and the funeral pyre of the homeless ascetics with milk-water.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, took the upper right tooth of the venerable tīrthaṅkara; Īśāna, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, took the upper left tooth; Camara, Indra of the Asuras, king of the Asuras, took the lower right tooth; Bali, Indra of the Vairocanas, king of the Vairocanas, took the lower left tooth; the remaining Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods took the remaining bodily parts according to suitability—some out of devotion to the Jina, some saying "this is custom," some saying "this is righteousness."
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, said thus to the many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods: "Quickly, O beloved of the gods! Erect three very large caitya-stūpas made of all kinds of gems—one at the funeral pyre of the venerable tīrthaṅkara, one at the funeral pyre of the gaṇadharas, and one at the funeral pyre of the remaining homeless ascetics."
Then those many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods quickly erected three very large caitya-stūpas made of all kinds of gems.
Then those many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods performed the final release celebration of the tīrthaṅkara; having performed it, they went to where the excellent Nandīśvara island was.
Then Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, performed the eight-day grand celebration on the eastern Añjanaka mountain.
Then the four lokapālas of Śakra, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, performed the eight-day grand celebration on the four Dadhimukha mountains.
Īśāna, Indra of the gods, king of the gods, performed the eight-day celebration on the northern Añjanaka mountain; his lokapālas performed the eight-day celebration on the four Dadhimukha mountains. And Camara [performed it] on the southern Añjanaka mountain; his lokapālas on the Dadhimukha mountains. Bali on the western Añjanaka mountain; his lokapālas on the Dadhimukha mountains.
Then the many Bhavanapati, Vāṇamantara, Jyotiṣka, and Vaimānika gods performed the eight-day grand celebrations; having performed them, they went to their respective celestial mansions, to their respective abodes, to their respective Sudharmā assembly halls, and to their respective Māṇavaka caitya pillars; having gone there, they deposited the relic bones of the Jina into diamond-set, spherical round reliquaries; having deposited them, they worshipped them with the best and most excellent garlands and scents, and having worshipped them, they lived enjoying extensive pleasures of the senses.
