When a period of twenty-one thousand years has elapsed in that age, with infinite modes of colour, infinite modes of smell, infinite modes of taste, infinite modes of touch, infinite modes of osseous structure, infinite modes of configuration, infinite modes of height, infinite modes of lifespan, infinite modes of heaviness and lightness, infinite modes of neither-heaviness-nor-lightness, and infinite modes of exertion, action, strength, energy, masculine vigour, and prowess diminishing and diminishing by infinite-fold decrease, at that point, O long-lived śramaṇas, the age called Dūṣamadūṣamā ("extremely sorrowful") will commence in time.

"Venerable sir! When that age reaches its highest extremity, what sort of appearance and manifestation will there be in the Bharaha realm?"

"Gautama! The time will become full of cries of woe, full of lamentation, and full of uproar. And by the nature of that time, winds will blow that are rough, harsh, soiled with dust, insupportable, tempestuous, terrifying, and cyclonic. Here the quarters will constantly smoke all around, flying with dust, fouled with grit, and obscured without light by masses of darkness. And due to the roughness of that time, the moon will release excessively cold air, and the sun will blaze excessively hot.

"Furthermore, Gautama! Constantly there will rain tasteless clouds, ill-tasting clouds, alkaline clouds, caustic clouds, fire clouds, lightning clouds, poison clouds, and thunderbolt clouds—raining non-drinkable water, water bringing on the arousal of diseases, ailments, and pain, and unwholesome water, with sharp showers beaten by fierce gales, accompanied by devastating downpours. By these, in the Bharaha realm, the inhabited country gathered in villages, mines, towns, market towns, bad towns, isolated settlements, coastal emporiums, port cities, and hermitages; the quadrupeds, cattle, and sheep; the sky-faring flocks of birds; the diverse mobile beings dwelling in village and forest realms; the plant-bodied beings such as trees, shrubs, bushes, creeping plants, vines, tendrils, and sprouts; and the medicinal plants will be destroyed. The mountains, hills, knolls, high grounds, elevated rocks, and so on—except for Mount Vaitāḍhya—will be leveled. And the bodies of water, chasms, rugged pits, and high and low grounds—except for the Gaṅgā and Sindhu rivers—will be made flat.

"Venerable sir! In that age, what sort of appearance and manifestation will there be for the ground of the Bharaha realm?"

"Gautama! The ground will become like live coals, like smoldering ashes, like cinders, like a heated iron pan, and like intensely blazing fire; full of dust, full of grit, full of mud, full of slime, and full of quagmires; and it will be difficult to tread upon for the many beings dwelling on the earth.

"Venerable sir! In that age, what sort of appearance and manifestation will there be for human beings in the Bharaha realm?"

"Gautama! Human beings will have bad forms, bad colours, bad smells, bad tastes, and bad touches; they will be undesirable, unpleasing, unlikable, inauspicious, disagreeable, and displeasing. They will have faint voices, plaintive voices, undesirable voices, unpleasing voices, unlikable voices, disagreeable voices, and displeasing voices; their words will carry no authority, and they will be shameless. They will be devoted to deceit, fraud, quarrel, slaughter, bondage, and enmity; they will excel in transgressing limits, will constantly be intent on wrongful deeds, will be devoid of modesty and obedience to teachers, and will have deformed bodies. Their nails, hair, beards, and body hair will be overgrown; they will be black, of a rough, harsh, dark-brown complexion, with cracked scalps, tawny and grey hair, bound with many sinews, and dreadful in appearance; their limbs will be enveloped in waves of contracted wrinkles; like old men ripened by old age, they will have sparse and fallen-out rows of teeth, wide pitcher-like mouths, uneven eyes and crooked noses, and frightful faces distorted by crooked wrinkles; their skin will be cracked, rough, and afflicted with ringworm, eczema, and white spots; their limbs will be spotted, overcome with scabies and itchy rashes, their bodies scarred by scratching with rough, sharp fingernails; with camel-like gait, disjointed limb-joints, bent and uneven bones, weak, with wretched bone structure, ill-proportioned, badly shaped, deformed, having wretched dwelling-places, seats, beds, and food; impure, their limbs afflicted with manifold diseases, with faltering and unsteady gait, dispirited, devoid of strength, motionless, their radiance gone, their limbs constantly blasted by cold, heat, and rough, harsh winds, and smeared with filthy dust; with much anger, pride, deceit, and greed, with great delusion, sharing in inauspicious sorrow; mostly fallen away from religious notions and right belief; at the maximum, having the height of a ratni; with a maximum lifespan of sixteen to twenty years; highly attached to their families of numerous sons and grandsons; there will be seventy-two pit-dwellers, like seeds, living in pits in dependence on the great rivers Gaṅgā and Sindhu, and on Mount Vaitāḍhya.

"Venerable sir! What will those human beings eat?"

"Gautama! At that period, at that time, the great rivers Gaṅgā and Sindhu will have a breadth equal only to a chariot path and will carry water only to the measure of an axle-hole's flow. And that water will be teeming with many fish and tortoises, but it will not abound in water-bodied souls.

"Then those humans will rush out from their pits at the muhūrta of sunrise and at the muhūrta of sunset; having rushed out, they will drag fish and tortoises onto dry ground; having dragged them out, they will live for twenty-one thousand years sustaining their livelihood on those fish and tortoises scorched by the cold and heat.

"Venerable sir! Those humans who are devoid of good conduct, devoid of vows, devoid of virtues, devoid of restraints, devoid of renunciations and pauṣadha fasts, and who mostly eat meat, fish, small creatures, and carrion—when they die at the end of their lifespan, where will they go? Where will they be reborn?"

"Gautama! They will mostly be reborn in hells and animal wombs.

"Venerable sir! Those lions, tigers, wolves, leopards, bears, hyenas, wild dogs, jackals, cats, dogs, wild boar dogs, hares, spotted deer, and leopards, who mostly eat meat, fish, small creatures, and carrion—when they die at the end of their lifespan, where will they go? Where will they be reborn?"

"Gautama! They will mostly be reborn in hells and animal wombs.

"Venerable sir! Those crows, herons, owlets, cormorants, and peacocks, who mostly eat meat, fish, small creatures, and carrion—when they die at the end of their lifespan, where will they go? Where will they be reborn?"

"Gautama! They will mostly be reborn in hells and animal wombs."
