[17] Then, in that place, the rite that produces intelligence was performed by priests whose names ended in Śarman, wherein, having recited “Earth is in you…” and so on, they caused the infant to lick a drop of clarified butter with the ring finger wrapped in gold. Next the longevity rite was performed, wherein the child was touched while reciting “Oṃ, lord of the sky…” and so forth. And with the mantras beginning “Oṃ, the heart is food for the vital breath…” the ground was consecrated in the four quarters and in the center. Then, with the mantra beginning “Oṃ, become a stone…”, the infant was touched again. Next, with “Oṃ, you are Iḍā…”, his mother was consecrated. Then the mother’s two breasts were successively washed with the two verses beginning “Oṃ, this breast…” and “Oṃ, that breast of yours…”. And after that, placing him lying upon his back on the childbed, a vessel of water was set down at his head with the mantra beginning “Oṃ, the waters among the gods…”.
