May that foot of Caṇḍikā, the fifth expedient, by which foot the enemy, the foe Mahiṣa, was slain, bring you joy! Which Mahiṣa did not take comfort, did not find satisfaction, through the *sāman* (a hymn of the Veda, and the first expedient) of the Source of the Vedas, Brahmā; nor did he take comfort or satisfaction through division (the tearing, and the second expedient) by Hari's discus; by the shower of rut (and the third expedient, the giving of gifts) of Indra's Airāvata, he was merely soiled, dirtied above—or rather, became enraged, but not pleased; nor was he subdued, tamed, by the staff (the weapon, and the fourth expedient) of Death, Yama. Therefore, he for whom the aforementioned expedients proved useless, for whom conciliation and the other expedients were rendered fruitless.

'My husband, the creator of the three worlds, skilled in slaying Tripura, this three-eyed one is watching;
where is a woman, and where is the desire for battle? Is this undertaking of mine not unseemly?'—
thinking thus, she who immediately killed the lord of the Asuras, touched by the corner of the moving big toe of her deceitfully averted foot, as if ashamed—may that Pārvatī protect you! || 47
