May that Rudrāṇī protect you, by whose foot all this was performed for the gods through the torment of the immortals' foe, Mahiṣa. For what kind of gods? Those whose fight was fruitless against Danu's sons. What kind of Rudrāṇī? Bringing welfare to the dwellers of heaven, causing prosperity to the gods. What was this? The thunderbolt-function, the work of the thunderbolt, of Thunderbolt-in-Hand (Indra); the discus-nature of the Discus-Bearer (Viṣṇu), splitter of the sons of Diti; the spear-nature of the Spear-Bearer (Śiva); the power of the spear of the Six-Faced One, Kārttikeya, the commander of the army of the gods. The sense is that the functions of the thunderbolt and the rest were accomplished by the Goddess's foot alone.
"The driver of the horses is lame; the chariot has an uneven team of horses and only one wheel;
the sun was made destitute of proper gear by the Creator"—having thus given up hostility toward the bird (the sun),
wandering the battleground out of pride, longing for the embrace of a warrior's combat,
by whose foot the gods' foe was sent to the abode of the Lord of the Ancestors—may that Ambikā protect you! || 99
