Courtesan: This inclination of mine is weighed against my noble character.
Śakāra: Master! Here is a deep street filled with darkness. Let not that wretch escape here! Ever since the procession of the god of love, this woman loves the Brahmin youth Cārudatta, the impoverished merchant's son, unsteady merely to the eye. This is the side gate of his house.
Courtesan: (Joyfully to herself) So this is his house! Fortunately, through being blocked by enemies, I have been brought near my beloved! Well, I will do this. (She slips away.)
Śakāra: (Looking around) Master! The wretch is gone, she is gone!
Viṭa: How gone? Search, search!
Śakāra: Master, she is not seen.
Viṭa: Alas, we are tricked! Vasantasenā, you are found out now!
True, you are not seen through the evening darkness, / like lightning trapped inside a cloud; / yet the perfume brought by the power of the wind / and the ornaments noisy with sound will betray you. .. 18 ..
