Fortunately, at the end of the deed dawn has broken. Indeed, now this was done by me for the ransom of Vasantasenā's attendant Madanikā. (Walking around) This is Vasantasenā's house. Let me enter. (Entering) Could Madanikā really be inside? Or rather, in the morning courtesans are present in the inner quarters. Therefore she must be right there. Let me call out. Madanikā! Madanikā!
Maidservant: (Listening) It sounds like Sajjalaka's voice! Mistress is occupied. So I will approach. (Stepping forward) Here I am.
Sajjalaka: Over here.
Maidservant: Why do you seem apprehensive in appearance?
Sajjalaka: Not at all; I wish to tell you something.
Courtesan: Handmaid! Place this picture-board on the bed. (Looking around) Where has the wretch gone? Or she must have gone not far. Let me look for her. (Walking around and looking) Ah, here she is, drinking in some man with an affectionate gaze, standing and talking with him. I suspect he is someone or other who asks for me with a purchase.
Sajjalaka: Listen to a secret.
Courtesan: It is improper to hear another's secret; I shall go.
