The campaka blossoms today finally shine bright upon the moon of the young woman’s face, which is slightly flushed with wine; / and hearing the tinkling of anklets ringing intensely at the foot-strikes upon the aśoka tree, swarms of bees seem to undertake an imitation [of it] with their accompanying humming. || 18
Vidūṣaka: (Listening) Oh friend! These bees are not imitating the sound of anklets; this is the very sound of the anklets of the queen's attendants.
King: Friend, you have judged correctly.
(Then enters Vāsavadattā, Kāñcanamālā, Sāgarikā, and attendants according to their rank.)
Vāsavadattā: Maid Kāñcanamālā, point out the path to the Makaranda garden.
Kāñcanamālā: Come, come, Your Majesty!
Vāsavadattā: (Walking around) Maid Kāñcanamālā, now how far is that red aśoka tree where I must perform worship to the blessed God of Love?
Kāñcanamālā: Your Majesty, it is quite close. Does Your Majesty not see? This indeed is the mādhavī creeper, embraced by Your Majesty, charming with continuous burst blossoms. And this other one is the navamālikā creeper, for which our lord wore himself out, eager to cause blossoms at an unseasonable time. So, passing beyond this, that red aśoka tree is seen immediately, where the queen will perform worship.
Vāsavadattā: Then come, let us go there.
Kāñcanamālā: Come, come, Your Majesty!
(All walk around.)
Vāsavadattā: This is that red aśoka tree where I shall perform worship. Therefore, bring me the materials for the worship.
Sāgarikā: (Approaching) Your Majesty, everything is ready.
