So come, let us approach. [Approaching:] Dear Vāsavadattā!
(1.64) Vāsavadattā. [Looking:] What! My noble lord! Victory, victory to my noble lord! Let my noble lord grace this place by accepting a seat. Here is a seat; let my noble lord sit down here.
[The King gesticulates sitting down.]
(1.65) Kāñcanamālā. Mistress, after adorning the red aśoka tree with impressions of flowers, saffron, and sandalwood applied by your own hand, let the blessed Pradyumna be worshipped.
(1.66) Vāsavadattā. Bring me the articles of worship, then.
(1.67) [Kāñcanamālā brings them.]
(1.68) [Vāsavadattā does so.]
(1.69) King. Dear Vāsavadattā!
With beauty immaculate from a very recent bath,
radiant in lovely silk dyed with safflower,
you shine, as you worship the Makara-bannered god,
like a creeper growing from a tree of tender shoots. (1.20)
And also:
Touched by your hand, beloved,
busied with the worship of the God of Love,
this aśoka tree looks as if
other, softer sprouts have broken forth! (1.21)
And furthermore:
Surely the Bodiless One will lament his bodilessness today,
since he did not obtain the joy of the touch of your hand! (1.22)
(1.70) Kāñcanamālā. Mistress, the blessed Pradyumna has been worshipped. So perform now the worshipful honor of our lord.
(1.71) Vāsavadattā. Bring me the flowers and the ointment, then.
(1.72) Kāñcanamālā. Mistress, all this is ready.
(1.73) [Vāsavadattā gesticulates worshipping the King.]
(1.74) Sāgarikā. [Holding flowers:] Alas, alas! How is it that my heart was distracted by longing for flowers, and I have delayed too long? So, hidden by this sinduvāra bush, I will watch. [Looking:] What! The blessed Flower-weaponed god himself in visible presence receives the worship! So I too, standing right here, will worship the blessed Flower-weaponed god with these flowers. [She throws the flowers.] Reverence to you, blessed Flower-weaponed god! May your vision prove fruitful to me! I have seen what was to be seen! [She bows.] How wonderful! Though seen, he must be seen again! So before anyone sees me, I shall go. [She exits.]
(1.75) Kāñcanamālā. Noble Vasantaka, come! Receive your auspicious offering now.
(1.76) [The Vidūṣaka approaches.]
(1.77) Vāsavadattā. [Preceded by the giving of ointment, flowers, and ornaments:] Noble Vasantaka, here is the auspicious offering. [She presents it.]
(1.78) Vidūṣaka. [Taking it with delight:] Prosperity to the queen!
(1.79) Behind the scenes a bard recites:
The sun having set, dispelling all its light, having crossed the sky's far shore,
the concourse of kings gathered together at the evening hour in the assembly
even now gazes upon the feet of Udayana, which steal the luster of day-lotuses,
as if upon the rising moon's rays that bring exquisite delight to the eyes. (1.23)
