tasmin deśe ya ācāraḥ pāramparyakramāgataḥ
varṇānāṃ sāntarālānāṃ sa sadācāra ucyate //

The custom handed down in regular succession (since time immemorial) among the (four chief) castes (varna) and the mixed (races) of that country, is called the conduct of virtuous men.
