śāstrodito hi niyamo vrataṃ tacca tapo mataṃ /
niyamāstu viśeṣāstu vratasyaiva damādayaḥ //
A votive observance is called ascetic austerity on account of the torment of the performer; / and it is called a restriction on account of the restraint of the aggregate of the senses.
