vrataṃ hi kartṛsantāpāttapa ity abhidhīyate /
indriyagrāmaniyamānniyamaścābhidhīyate //
A votive observance is called ascetic austerity because it burns away [sins] from the performer; / and it is called a restraint because of the restraint of the collection of senses.
