Here the specific detail in the Brāhmapurāṇa is: "Nārada said: 'By what means women may become beautiful, fortunate, endowed with good offspring, and devoted to their husbands—tell me that observance, O Lord Brahmā.' / Śrī Brahmā said: 'Listen, O best of brahmins, to the auspicious observance called Sukharātri, a secret granting peace and happiness, which I have not told to anyone. / In the month of Kārttika, on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, is this excellent observance, by the mere performance of which women increase their good fortune. / Viṣṇu, the source of the universe, sleeps happily along with Lakṣmī on that night; therefore it is spoken of by people as the Janasuptikā. / On that night, having drawn with mineral pigments, in the Lord’s five colors, the Jīvarātri, that is Sukharātri, in one's own house, / one should then paint the forms of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and the others. And having obtained the permission of her husband for the sake of good fortune, / she should prepare the worship offerings for the rite. / Then, having diligently anointed the body with fragrant substances, / women should take a bath in pleasantly warm water, O best of the twice-born. / Having bathed, put on delightful garments according to rule, / and having caused the installation of Sukharātri to be performed by a brahmin, / the deities beginning with Sukharātri must be worshipped according to rite with perfumes, flowers, unbroken rice grains, and the like, by women accompanied by their friends: / 'The deity of the domestic dwelling who has been drawn by me as Sukharātri—may she accept the worship offered by me, and may she grant me happiness. / Salutations to you, O Sukharātri, giver of life, bestower of happiness, beloved of Śiva! Accept this worship indeed and protect the children. / Grant beauty, grant victory, grant knowledge, happiness, and wealth; give me wisdom, and grant all desires happily with esteem.' / Having thus prayed to that goddess amidst the sounds of songs and musical instruments, / the worship of Lakṣmī should then be performed with devotion by women together with their husbands, / with three offerings of worship and these mantras addressed to the beloved of Hari: / 'Hail, O Goddess, Mother of the universe, residing on Viṣṇu's chest! O Ramā, salutations to you; grant me immovable good fortune here! / May that charming goddess Mahālakṣmī, who remains awake amid the row of lamps on the auspicious earth and rests on Hari's chest, grant me boons!' / Having thus praised the goddess Mahālakṣmī, the giver of happiness, / women should play at dice with their husband on Dīpāvalī, with the desire for victory, dependent on the husband: so said the Supreme Spirit. / The devoted wife who performs the endearing observance named Sukharātri in this manner according to the rite, / she truly becomes here endowed with sons, filled with wealth and grain, and possesses a living husband." Thus. 101.
