The offering of water to Yama has already been stated, and he will describe the offering of water to Bhīṣma later in the vow of Bhīṣmapañcaka. A lamp should be offered to Naraka, to the demon Naraka. On this point, there is an elaboration in the Sāroddhāra:
"Formerly, in the Saurīva country, there was a courtesan dear to people, / named Līlāvatī, virtuous and devoted to devotion to Hari. / Once, she joyfully approached the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha; / endowed with modesty, she inquired about the māhātmya of the fourteenth day. / Vasiṣṭha said: / 'Having performed the vow in this manner on the thirteenth, at moonrise in the night, / a bath with sesame oil should be taken by men who fear hell. / And that lunar day is called Nārakī, renowned among the worlds. / Formerly, from Lord Varāha, one named Naraka was born / upon the earth; and that wicked soul conquered all the gods, / and that evil-minded one stole the sovereignty of the gods. / At that time, all the deities went to Kṛṣṇa for refuge, / and petitioned by them for the slaughter of Naraka, / Śrī Kṛṣṇa went to where the wicked-souled Naraka, son of the Earth, was. / Having slain Naraka along with his ministers on the fourteenth day of Kārtika, / the supreme Kṛṣṇa then granted a boon to the fourteenth day: / "Those who will perform oil-massage and donation of clothes and the like, / to them I give fame, renown, sons, and sovereignty." / Having thus granted boons to it, it became renowned on earth from that time on. / Because on that day Mahālakṣmī is present in the oil, / and Gaṅgā, sprung from the lotus foot of Viṣṇu, remover of the world's impurities, / indeed establishes her presence in that warm water. / If the fourteenth day should occur at the moonrise of the thirteenth / in the dark [fortnight] of Āśvina, it is called Nārakī. / Even during Vyatīpāta, Vaidhṛti, or on the day of [the death of] mother and father, / if it is Nārakī Caturdaśī, a bath must be taken with sesame oil. / A bath with sesame oil should be taken by women as well as by men, / by ascetics, widows, or the desireless, according to rule; / an oil-massage should be performed then, otherwise one would go to hell.'" .. 42 ..
