rakṣaṇīyā mayā devā iti sañcintya śaṅkaraḥ |
duṣkaraṃ vratamatyugraṃ tamuvāca maheśvaraḥ ||

The Devas ought to be protected by me; thus thinking, S’ankara Mahes’vara advised him an entirely difficult tapasyâ to practise.
