Listen, my friend! May you live long!
Has the ancient proverb, 'He who does good in this life
suffers no evil,' proved false today? —
Red-eyed Maḻavar warriors with curly, unkempt tufts
falling over their shoulders like ram horns,
carrying fierce bows with small fire-tipped arrows,
and earth that stops weapon-thrusts,
whirl their foaming churning-sticks on the herd's flanks,
wearing away their foot-covering leather sandals as they march,
and seizing the calves to raid the guarded pastures,
raising the gathered herd through the wide, expansive forest,
where, like a boat in the vast dark sky,
the many-rayed sun halts at midday,
and the whirling, scorchingly hot summer wind
causes the aged, falling blossoms of the low-forest muruṅkai
to drop in heaps like cold winter hailstones —
though he crossed those many dewy mountains,
we have done no fault worthy of resentment!
