Pitying the distress of those joined [in love] is indeed / fitting for those who understand! What is this? Like pearls / scattered at the mountain’s base, hailstones of fresh water / striking the speckled face of an elephant, / streak the rocks as if spilling crystal. / In the wide sky where the rage of the rainy season has fallen, / lightning flashes like creeper-flames from a firebrand releasing sparks; / in the midnight when driving rain poured, / amidst darkness where prowling beasts of unyielding strength roam, / he comes alone, without showing any mercy at all— / may you live, my friend!— / frightened by the peacock of mingled spots, like the snake / spreading its hood with its tormenting, dreadful head, / stretching high to touch the tender branches of the kāyā, / in the swaying clusters of the gloriosa lily raising many ladles, / the bee that drinks the fragrant pollen of the lovely flowers / appears like a game-piece moved by hand, / on the cloud-veiled peak of the lord of the mountain!
