The town where she dwells, who granted her beauty, / she of kohl-lined eyes like soft, multi-petaled blossoms, / of sweet speech like the music of the fine lute’s strings— / it has wide tracts where bamboo grows, where playful wild calves frolic / in the grove of tall trees rooted deep in the forest, / where herds of tuskers plow the ground. / In the fork of the path in the wasteland tract, where cairns of dry brush, / uncounted in number, mark those who fell when struck by the force / of white-tipped arrows, wayfarers have died, falling victim to capture; / yet those who traverse that wilderness, even if they have no wealth at hand, / are spared their sweet life, their bodies unslain; but for failing to leave [tribute], / they pay tusks of great bull elephants and striped tiger skins / to the unjust king who rules there: / many dried-up hills lie between us!
