அம்மென் சேரி கேட்பினும் கேட்க;
'தடமென் பணைத்தோள் மடநல் லீரோ!
எல்லும் எல்லின்று; அசைவுமிக உடையேன்;

Let mother know if she must know;
let the soft-spoken settlement with gossiping mouths hear if it must hear;
I shall swear a stern oath to you, invoking the deity of the swirling Pukār,
saying so that all know there is nothing else:
When we had bathed in the sea with the companions of the grove who weave garlands,
built small houses of sand, gathered little heaps of play-food,
and rested a while to ease our weariness,
a man approached and said,
"O tender, good women with broad, soft, bamboo-like arms!
The sun has set; I am sorely fatigued;
what harm is there if I eat a meal served on a broad soft leaf,
and stay in this noisy little hamlet?"
Seeing him, with downcast faces turning our backs, we replied:
"These are not fit for you; this is coarse food of fat fish."
Saying with a loud murmur, "Look, do we not see ships with tall flags swaying?"
and kicking away [our sandcastles] with their feet,
all the others left without staying.
Among them, looking only at me, he asked mournfully, "O girl with a fair forehead,
shall I depart?"
And as I looked at him to say "Go,"
he stood holding the pinnacle of his tall chariot,
and even today he seems to stand before my eyes!
