Even in unpromising times they swerve not from friendship,
with unvarying counsel walking in its path —
like the rich, good land of the Kōcar of many spears,
who kept their word, honoring Ahtai of bountiful joy who scatters gifts in battle,
lord of the singers with young, small-headed female elephants,
a land of beautiful fields of blue water lilies fragrant with new toddy —
he embraced my shoulders that were like that land,
and then deserted me without grace while the noisy ancient town spread rumors!
Saying: 'He has gone far away,
having crossed the dried-up ford and the sandy bank
with sparse, blood-stained, red-streaked water
where enemies washed their weapons after slaying wayfarers on the path,
beyond the fine land of the tireless minstrel who, like a festival feast,
has heaps of fat meat and carries a long spear of ripe timber with dense black spirals,
who seizes alien cattle with bunched-hump bulls
from enemies' grain-rich fortified hamlets where they dwell watchful of opportunity,
even if their unwearying, sturdy feet that never tire of trampling rocks,
supplied with rations kept in firm gourds, have grown exhausted' —
when they said this, that the sorrow in my helpless heart
suffering misery might leave me,
I too might have the strength to live without weeping:
like a bird departing its region, leaving desolate its nest
on a swaying, lovely branch of a thick-trunked tree,
leaving my body here behind,
let my life go to the place where he does his work!
