'Hear me, friend! He does not even think of me
in the bleak, sorrowful evening when the sun, its powerful rays dimmed
as it reaches the hill, suddenly disappears like the moon swallowed by the snake,
over the moist, fragrant woodland strewn with various flowers falling
like the scattered offerings in the field where the Velan priest dances with frenzy!' —
so that her sorrow from sulking with us may depart,
o charioteer learned in treatise lore! Drive on!
See over there: the sky-touching battlements where long banners flutter,
where the bright torches raised by those who keep the night watch
appear shining like the stars in the expanse of heaven;
in that fearsome ancient city kept with difficult guard,
within the auspicious home, her flawless chaste love secluded,
we shall see that exquisite maiden of awe-inspiring beauty,
with streak-lined, moist, lustrous eyes and bamboo-like rounded shoulders —
drive the chariot harnessed to spirited horses with golden trappings!
