அழியா விழவின், அஞ்சுவரு மூதூர்ப்
பழிஇலர் ஆயினும், பலர்புறங் கூறும்
அம்பல் ஒழுக்கமும் ஆகியர், வெஞ்சொல்
சேரிஅம் பெண்டிர் எள்ளினும் எள்ளுக;
நுண்பூண் எருமை குடநாட் டன்னஎன்
ஆய்நலம் தொலையினும் தொலைக; என்றும்
நோய்இல ராக, நம் காதலர் - வாய்வாள்
எவ்வி வீழ்ந்த செருவில் பாணர்
கைதொழு மரபின்முன் பரித்துஇடூஉப் பழிச்சிய
வள்உயிர் வணர்மருப்பு அன்ன, ஒள்இணர்ச்
சுடர்ப்பூங் கொன்றை ஊழுறு விளைநெற்று
அறைமிசைத் தாஅம் அத்த நீளிடைப்,
பிறைமருள் வான்கோட்டு அண்ணல் யானை,
சினம்மிகு முன்பின், வாமான், அஞ்சி
இனம்கொண்டு ஒளிக்கும் அஞ்சுவரு கவலை
நன்னர் ஆய்கவின் தொலையச் சேய்நாட்டு
நம்நீத்து உறையும் பொருட்பிணிக்
கூடா மையின், நீடி யோரே!

Though they be blameless, let the village whispers arise,
spoken behind our backs by many in this fearful ancient town of ceaseless festivals;
let the harsh-tongued women of the hamlet mock us if they will;
let my exquisite beauty, like the Western Land of Erumai of delicate ornaments, perish if it must!
May he be ever free from illness—our lover,
who, along the long wilderness path where over the rocks scatter
the fully ripened dry pods of the golden shower tree with bright clusters of flaming flowers,
resembling the curved, resonant horns that bards,
in customary worship, snapped and discarded before them in praise
at the battle where sharp-sworded Evvi fell;
where the noble bull elephant with tusk white as the crescent moon,
fearing the tiger of great fierce strength, hides with his herd
in fearful crossroads;
who prolonged his stay in that distant land, neglecting us
so that my good, choice beauty is ruined, bound by the craving for wealth!
