Thinking neither of the dark-clustered nocci that bloomed beside jasmine,
nor of her playmates with lovely striped loins,
trusting the deceitful words of a stranger, she departed, leaving desolate
our wealthy, beautiful home of fine deeds.
In the deserted land where on black-trunked tooth-brush trees,
at terrifying crossroads, the white-headed vulture calls to its mate so as to arouse pity,
swinging her golden bangles so that they jingle, stepping so the anklets on her red feet ring,
my daughter has gone.
Without washing with fragrant oil her combed, curved tresses, parting them,
as I used to do, weaving flowers into them,
has her lover, of matchless excellence and passionate love, woven fragrant varied blooms,
loosening the braids so that they fall wavy, covering her small back—
resembling the shimmering dark sand rippling in the sweet-water forest stream
north of Vāṇaṉ's Ciṟukuṭi of unfailing abundance,
surrounded by ponds where the curved-footed turtle with its young
seizes the white, ripe fruit falling from the tall mango tree?
