'Her forehead, her shoulders, her speckled beauty-spot lap, / and her color, her charm, and her fine lines will wither / and she will suffer,' looking clearly thus, / rather than thinking 'marriage is best', even if he departs—in vain / the pirantai vine cut by wayfarers / resembles the fresh chopped-off segment of a struck snake / and shrivels beside the path in the wilderness path; with frantic zeal / on the abandoned stone hearths left by salt-merchant caravans, / strong-bowed Maḻavar boil meat and feast; / never minding that the way across the wasteland tract is desolate, with growing inner strength, / holding a wooden-hafted spear of keen edge, with a sturdy socket / and a leather ring adorned with tied peacock feathers, / its broad blade shining finely in the shape of a neytal leaf, / making their companion only the fearful, barren waste, / will he dare to venture indeed—on the path at the foot of the hill, / its peaks steeped in black clouds, with empty springs / into which a noble tall tusker, having suffered deep wounds / on its torn forehead from enduring a valiant tiger, plunged eagerly to drink in heavy distress / and pressing its knee-joints, plunges its trunk and sighs deeply?
