We have reason to laugh, O heart!—In the days when the sky rises dry, / the fierce summer heat prolonged, / in the small pool of muddy water sharpened by drought, / in the scooped pit at the edge, a different, strong bull elephant / washes the soft head of its young-bearing gentle cow elephant in the undrinkable mud / and bathes in the mire, / then rubs its itching back against a bur-flower tree of gnarled nature, / touching it so that its red-stemmed, pale clusters sway; / resting in its fading, dappled shade, / she will come with us, they say—she of broad, soft shoulders— / in the forest of black-faced langurs / where, as the fierce wind with arrow-swift force lifts / the white umbrella of food bundles belonging to wayfarers / whom cruel-natured Maḻavar pierced with wheels, / the frightened male monkey calls out to its mate, mistaking it [for an eagle].
