நாம்நகை யுடையம் நெஞ்சே!- கடுந்தெறல்
இரும்பிழி மகாஅரிவ் அழுங்கல் மூதூர்
விழவின் றாயினும் துஞ்சா தாகும்:
மல்லல் ஆவணம் மறுகுடன் மடியின்,
வல்லுரைக் கடுஞ்சொல் அன்னை துஞ்சாள்;
பிணிகோள் அருஞ்சிறை அன்னை துஞ்சின்.
துஞ்சாக் கண்ணர் காவலர் கடுகுவர்;
இலங்குவேல் இளையர் துஞ்சின், வைஎயிற்று
வலஞ்சுரித் தோகை ஞாளி மகிழும்;
அரவவாய் ஞமலி மகிழாது மடியின்,
பகலுரு உறழ நிலவுக்கான்று விசும்பின்
அகல்வாய் மண்டிலம் நின்றுவிரி யும்மே;
திங்கள் கல்சேர்வு கனைஇருள் மடியின்,
இல்எலி வல்சி வல்வாய்க் கூகை
கழுதுவழங்கு யாமத்து அழிதகக் குழறும்;
வளைக்கண் சேவல் வாளாது மடியின்,
மனைச்செறி கோழி மாண்குரல் இயம்பும்;
எல்லாம் மடிந்த காலை, ஒருநாள்
நில்லா நெஞ்சத்து அவர்வா ரலரே; அதனால்
அரிபெய் புட்டில் ஆர்ப்பப் பரிசிறந்து,
ஆதி போகிய பாய்பரி நன்மா
நொச்சி வேலித் தித்தன் உறந்தைக்
கல்முதிர் புறங்காட் டன்ன
பல்முட் டின்றால் - தோழி!- நம் களவே.

We have reason to laugh, O heart!—This noisy ancient town / of men who drink hard liquor in scorching heat / does not sleep even when there is no festival; / if the bustling market stalls and the streets fall asleep, / mother of cruel words and harsh speech does not sleep; / if mother, holding me in her strict prison-like custody, falls asleep, / guards with sleepless eyes hasten about; / if the youths with gleaming spears fall asleep, / the dog with sharp teeth and curled-right tail barks; / if the noisy-mouthed dog does not bark and sleeps, / like the appearance of day, spitting moonlight in the sky, / the wide-faced lunar disk stands spreading [its light]; / if the moon reaches the mountain and dense darkness falls asleep, / the strong-beaked owl that feeds on domestic mice / screeches destructively at midnight when spirits wander; / if that cock of curved eyes sleeps in silence, / the rooster confined in the house sounds its noble voice; / when all have fallen asleep, on one day, / he of unsteadfast heart does not come; therefore, / like the stone-filled outer cremation ground of Uṟantai belonging to Tittaṉ, / fenced with chaste-trees, where swift fine horses / of high breeding run fast, rattling with bell-filled anklets, / our secret love has met with many obstacles, O companion!
