“If our foes bring fine ornaments and bull elephants,
come paying tribute, bowing down, and speak in submission, saying, ‘Depart!’
it is certain the king will enter [the city] this very day
with his gathered army that divides the earth.
It is well: so that our beloved, of faultless character, may rest happily
upon the well-made couch in the storied, magnificent palace,
and so the weariness of the camp may depart from you—
urge on your chariot, harness-steered, with swiftly galloping steeds of clipped manes
and golden gear that flashes like lightning,
scattering the humming bees on the long pathway smelling of blossoms,
where the fresh jasmine vines have unfurled in the generous rain,
so that you reach by dawn
the town with high walls and rows of battlements,
where on the broad open terraces resounds the sweet music of horns
blown by the twilight watchmen in the evening!”
