"You must remember [me] after you depart," she said / in the deep night, trembling as she held [me] close—how could he live forgetting you? / "Looking at the grain fallen from tall, swaying bamboos hidden by wild grass," / where the stag calls his doe in the wilderness, / by huts with broken fences built against the rocks, / from large-leaved cotton plants flourishing near cisterns, / the bird feeds its chicks with unripe pods swollen like wombs, / and [then] the puffy white seeds split open by the bird / are gathered by poor women to heap at their loins— / where inhabitants of troubled frontier hamlets hold their heads in distress, / and Maḻavar warriors with sharp weapons who ate fattened cows, / shod in leather sandals, crowd around clear pools / in the difficult arid wilderness—such paths are not hard / for going with her who has slender arms like rounded rods, / well-formed ornaments, honey-scented tresses, / and painted kuvaḷai eyes!"—so our lover / opened the truth of his heart to us, / O you with lovely, fine tresses and exquisite jewels!
