"To give [wealth] to those in need is far better for us / than being with her whose long, dark hair, / falling like lush, soft leaves closely interwoven on a loft raised high into the sky, / is dark with swarming bees, / and wears a large, cool garland spreading fragrant honey for beetles to drink!" / If you say to me, "Come with us / through the dread wilderness where Maḻavar warriors of the whistling arrow and unerring bow / carry away herds of cattle at dawn, / and where men who wiped the tears falling from the rimmed eyes / of weary calves left behind on their long journey / have their names and deeds inscribed on hero-stones erected by every path, / adorned with peacock feathers, resembling an enemy front of spiked shields", / I will not follow! O heart, may you succeed in your pursuit alone!
