The stalks of the millet crop have hung down, ripe for harvest; / plagued with sorrow, her forehead has lost its fine beauty; / seeing this, the people of this village mutter spiteful gossip; / therefore, if you would show grace to the forest girl of delicate gait, / sister to the jungle-dwellers whose arrows have hollow barbs that pierce elephant faces, / and who feast on white fat, / her with soft, beautiful bamboo-like shoulders and rain-cool eyes like exquisite petals, / take her with you and depart, O lord with a chest of fine ornaments, / to your settled town surrounded by a wall of great mountains, / where, in the mountain slope drenched by falling rain, / short-winged bees open closed buds in deep pools, / feed on the blossoming clusters of vēṅkai flowers, / sleep in the honeyed, dense bunches of kāntaḷ lilies, / and dream of the must flowing from the dark cheeks of elephants!
