Treating noble guests with boundless generosity / to white rice rich with ghee and blemish-free meat,
when birds gave sweet omens, while in the wide dark sky / of clear radiance the moon was faultlessly conjoined with Rhohiṇī (Śakaṭam),
they decorated the wedding house, paid homage to God,
and as broad drums roared alongside resonant marriage drums,
the women who had bathed the bride, seized with excitement,
gazed without blinking their flower-eyes, and then stepped aside;
with the tender-flowered vākai's dull-backed forked leaves,
and well-growing aṟukai grass cropped by old calves,
they tied white threads with cool fragrant buds
of dark-petaled pavai, like washed sapphires, brought forth by the roaring sky's first showers;
she was radiant in pure garments, filled with beauty,
in the sand-strewn wedding arbor that looked like a raincloud,
her body cooled from the sweat of wearing heavy jewels,
on that first night when her kin gave her to me:
'O woman of our life, whose chaste love is free of fault!
Enveloping yourself entirely in an unbroken garment,
your crescent forehead, intensely stifled, is beaded with sweat;
uncover it a little so the passing breeze may cool it!'
As I snatched the covering with a longing heart,
she flashed like a sword drawn from its sheath,
and not knowing how to conceal herself, she suddenly
bowed in shame—and hiding her face in the dark,
concealed herself in her dark, abundant tresses, adorned with choice flowers buzzing with bees,
that I gently smoothed, parted like thick rival water lilies.
