Even if he has not arrived, having crossed the forest river in the wasteland
where wayfarers dig up silt to drink, and a male elephant touches the small spring
yearning for a female's footprint, to you—
in Uṟantai of the sweet, strong liquor belonging to the victorious Cōḻar kings
of battle-winning drums,
in the cool grove smelling of fragrance upon the shapely white sands
of the great river whose banks crumble as the rushing waters press in,
after the festival of coupling in Paṅkuni has passed,
like the festival stage with its fireless hearths
in the dense-treed grove where leaves have fallen,
your forehead has taken on immense desolation, and your shoulders,
resembling the fine, beautiful, tall bamboos on the slopes
of the mountain of victorious Cōḻiyaṉ, lord of the clear sea with undrilled pearls,
have lost their ancient beauty: I grieve for you.
