Listen, my companion, loving confidante!
As clear tears brim in my kohl-rimmed kuvaḷai eyes,
seeing me grieve in sorrow without cause, mother
suspected something else—
wearing the fragrant green leaves of the margosa tree with water lilies,
the southern king of the long, well-shaped leaf-spear and sea-like army
that conquers his enemies—bringing into the house the dread-inspiring Murukaṉ,
to the sound of sweet instruments playing with surging rhythm like the roaring waterfall
plunging down from the difficult peak of his Potiyil mountain,
and worshiping with folded hands, singing of the kaṭampu tree and elephant,
swaying and holding garlands and flower strands in their hands, is it good
that day after day they kept seeking [divination]?
On the hillcrest at midnight, the time of rendezvous
for the man from the good mountain country who pledged his word to you,
in the impenetrable, sharp darkness that has fallen, erasing the path,
where a serpent vomits its splendid jewel and confuses it
with the fine color of a bee buzzing around a fresh flower on a rich gloriosa lily petal,
my heart broods over that harsh, long path amid difficult clefts.
