"On the red-eaten great highway resembling lac, / strewn with the fallen flowers of the kāyā, / adorned by many red velvet mites / like gems interspersed with coral, / on the difficult path through the lovely jungle surrounded by hills, / where the twisted-horned blackbuck embraces the gentle doe / and leaps about, grazing on tender grass, / cowherds disperse through the wide mullai land / and string sweet-smelling blossoms beside the hillock; / fine cows that have grazed on arugam grass, walking with a proud gait, / with swelling, excellent udders dripping sweet milk, / lowing to call their calves, return to fill the common ground— / if he does not think of us even at this evening, / what will become of us in the morning, bard?" / Unable to reply to the words of the mistress of the house, / I tuned the sweet Sevvaḻi melody on my fine yāḻ, / softly praised the gods, calming her sorrowful form, / and set out toward him, when I beheld— / the decorated tall chariot of the lord of the fine town on the frontier, / resembling the thundering sound of dark monsoon clouds, / its many-spoked wheels grinding and rumbling against rocks, / as the horses with freed speed galloped swiftly!
