The beloved, innocent daughter of a salt-merchant with a swift driving-rod,
who announces for barter a load of white stone salt
made without plowing in the black salt-pans
by fishermen of the small hamlet who hunt in the wide sea,
as she goes through the hillocks cleft by the fierce sun,
swinging her arms so that her few bright radiant bangles jingle,
crying through the settlement, "White stone salt equal to paddy!",
causes the house-dog, knowing its master's voice, to bark.
Frightened by it, her eyes, resembling darting kayal fish clashing together,
have become a sickness for me that makes me breathe hot sighs,
suffering like the yoked leading bullock
pulled with difficulty by its owner to relieve the distress
of a cart stuck in deep black mud
resembling the smoky shadow of a slash-and-burn field cultivated by a hillman.
