Listen, may you live long, my friend!
Excessively sweet are my dreams every night; and in waking reality,
the bird-omens in our well-made, beautiful house are auspicious too!
My heart dwells in exceeding joy.
When worldly labor ceases entirely, the plow rests,
the clouds and winds withdraw, and in the wide sky
the full moon shines highlighting the dark rabbit-mark,
at the midnight of wide darkness when the Pleiades gather,
lighting the streets with lamps and hanging garlands,
in the ancient, victorious old city where many throng together,
may he arrive as they celebrate the festival!
Dry and fragrant, crowded with pure flowers,
her cool, fragrant tresses smelling of takaram,
in the protected house where the newly wed maiden has dined,
they set a pot of milk on the hearth of many stones;
maidens with short tresses and small bangles
break off the bending ears of grain from the great paddy fields
and pound them into fresh beaten rice with heavy black pestles;
frightened by that harsh thumping sound, a heavy, pregnant white heron
will not sit upon the high fronds of the sweet-clustered plantain,
but trains its short-winged young in the tall mango tree:
he has crossed the wilderness in the realm of Vēṅkaṭam,
conspicuous with its high, honey-fragrant mountain,
where male monkeys leap and gambol among rock-rooted vēṅkai trees
so that fresh blooms fall from the broad branches in the midst of tiger-striped flowers
with sweet narantam blossoms,
in order to fetch the wealth of good renown
like Iṭaiyāṟu of the Cōḻa of victorious battles, Karikālaṉ of great fame,
who settled families who had migrated away.
