Like fresh, fragrant sprigs of kino blossoming along with wild jasmine
on the slope of the high mountain separated and spread out,
her bent teats hung low, having borne three cubs whose claws
within their sheath of flesh were not yet unleashed;
because his mate in the rocky crevice cave was stricken with hunger,
a dot-marked male tiger with sliced mouth
listens intently to the male call of a six-tined stag
in the long, incomplete distance of branching desert paths—
like Veḷḷivītiyār, indeed, I too
longed to set out; deeply grieving,
languishing as life departs from sorrow without eating,
my arms losing their ancient beauty, daily
pining for the return of him who departed,
since there is no other medicine, I sit here without purpose!
