With a large, handsome, strong trunk like a thick palm tree,
with strength and vigor that does not relent from murderous wrath,
with bee-swarming rut, a high-tusked elephant
destroys trees along the cool, fragrant slope;
gores a fierce tiger so that it screams; breaks its pride;
and seizes the great millet field—O lord of such a land!
Just as the owl, who did not go to see
when Āay Eyinaṉ of swift horses fought with Miñili of the tall chariot
and fell on the battlefield, is ashamed
and does not go about in the bright daylight,
her distress is indeed great! Therefore,
you must come in the evening—
along the narrow stony path on the terraces at the foot of the mountain,
where a great bull elephant, browsing on bamboo shoots in the grove, wanders.
