'A life that falls not into unrighteous ways, and wealth / that never goes begging at another's gate — both / are attained through wealth, O wearer of fine jewels!' / so said he, stroking our dark, fivefold braid, / before he traversed the hills where wild hemp withers — / where the damp traces left by big tigers prowling through the mire / within the footprints stamped by huge male elephants / that found no water when parched with thirst, / beside the small pit filled from the curved trough / dug by the loud-calling cowherds in the well / of the Pāṇ nation abundant in herds of cattle, / look like the marks pressed by the fingers / of the minstrel troupe of faultless tongue / resting upon the face of the clay-smeared drum. / Though we suffer grief, my friend, / may he accomplish his intended task!
