O lord of the sweet-watered settlement! where the watchmen, / fearing old cows might eat the red-husked fresh ears / of rich paddy from fertile fields, / looking like the attached chowries hung upon the horses / of rich lords possessing drums, / bind them with bitter gourd's fine vines together with morning glory, / feed them sugarcane inside the kāñci tree, / is it indeed right: / When this girl with kohl-lined kuvaḷai eyes and I / were wearing full garlands of water lilies from the fields / on a day when the sun did not burn, / you came and said, 'Prosper, playing toy games!' / and for the fault of not smiling at you, / O great one, / while mother weeps, knowing no way to calm it, / waving towards the deity of the sacred bathing-ghat / a white-eared kid with standing horns, offering toddy and a garland as gifts, / should her body, shimmering like a jewel, take on a golden pallor?
